Program Notes: 'Level Up!' was commissioned and premiered by Jessica Payne at the Northwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in Eugene, Oregon on March 24th, 2024. This piece is a six-movement work and was heavily inspired by the soundtracks of different video games that the composer grew up playing. This includes video game franchises such as: Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros., Pokémon, Kirby, The Legend of Zelda, and Undertale. Each of the six movements was written to sound like the kind of music one might hear in the levels of a video game. The style of the piece becomes increasingly modern as the movements progress and the themes of each movement progress similarly to the way many video games progress. This piece was originally written for euphonium and has been arranged for horn.
