Program Notes: ‘Red Giant’ refers to a type of dying star at the most violent phase of its stellar evolution. Depending on the mass of a red giant, the star will either shed its outer layers and transform into a white dwarf star or explode and create a supernova. The beginning of my piece features a busy and frantic texture in the ensemble, depicting the explosive nature of this phase of a star, while the middle section drastically slows down and zooms out, depicting the relatively brief yet intense flare of light created by the transformation of a red giant. The end of my piece zooms back in, depicting the final explosive moments of a red giant star before exploding. ‘Red Giant’ was composed for and premiered by Chatter PDX.
